NSYCC Career Symposium · Panel #5: Innovative Careers in Science — Chemistry Careers Beyond the Lab Bench 💡 Saturday, Nov 14, 2026 · Brandeis University

A #chemistry degree doesn't have to end in a lab or a lecture hall. Can a #PhD chemist become a patent attorney? What does a field applications chemist at an instrument company actually do? How do you move from the bench into business development? What is a research institute, and how is it different from a university or a pharma company?
Three chemists who took the degree somewhere unexpected are coming to Brandeis to explain how:
• Rui (Rio) Cao — Senior Business Development Manager, ChemScene. Partners with medicinal chemistry and process chemistry teams across the Northeast and beyond. Chemistry degree, business development senior management within a cutting-edge chemical manufacturing company ChemScene
• Dr. Madison H. McMinn — Field Service Applications Chemist, Waters Corporation. Trains LC-MS users across the Americas. Ph.D. Northeastern University, 2025.
• Dan Wilson — Principal Research Scientist, Kostas Research Institute (KRI) at Northeastern University. Leads the Adaptive Materials and Sensing group. Research outside academia and outside pharmaceuticals industry — we look forward to hearing what a research-institute career looks like, and how the funding and the pace differ.
Who this is for: chemistry and biochemistry undergrads, master's and PhD students, postdocs, and working chemists in Boston, Cambridge, Waltham, and across New England who aren't sure the bench or the classroom is where they want to end up — and want to see what else the degree can do.
Panel #5 is one of five career panels at the 2026 NSYCC Career Symposium, hosted by the NESACS (Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society) Younger Chemists Committee - American Chemical Society (NSYCC) of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
The full day (9 AM–5:30 PM) also includes Academic & Teaching Careers, Careers in Industry with MedChem Boston, Graduate School 101, a founders fireside chat, a LinkedIn workshop, optional 1:1 CV reviews, and a social reception at Shopper's Cafe.
Free parking at Brandeis. Tickets are $20. We'll introduce each Panel #5 panelist this week. Follow along, and bring your questions on Nov 14.
